A World Wide Reseller

“I wish people would ask me how to start reselling.” 

From sourcing in Jordan to reselling in Thailand, my friend Segun Kamara shows me that reselling is possible anywhere you go in the world.

I’ve had the chance to sit down and pick his brain a little to see what I could learn to help me and the reseller community up its game.

As a firm believer in learning from mistakes I asked Segun,

What is the hardest lesson you had to learn as a reseller and what did you change because of it?

Segun started his reselling journey when the pandemic broke out like many people. He first began selling video games, because everyone was at home and needed something to do. The best sourcing option for him was the app LetGo. However, he ran into trouble when LetGo merged with OfferUp.

The algorithms and functionality of the apps were different after the merger, and he could no longer find the games he would buy and resell. This forced him to adapt and start reselling in other product categories, which is why he now sells electronics, not just video games.

Because of this experience, I asked Segun,

How important is it to learn about different platforms and sourcing options?

It’s extremely important. When someone is just beginning to resell it’s important to try all different sourcing methods. It’s not just limited to online platforms. Going to garage sales, flea markets, and thrift stores is just as important. What really matters is trying different sourcing strategies to find out what will work for your business.

Segun now sources mostly at flea markets and swap meets for most of his inventory.

My Key Takeaway: Diversify your sourcing options and learn how to use different online platforms.

I asked Segun what he wished someone had taught him as a new reseller to help him get to where he is now more quickly.

His answer was quick and simple. Get on social media.

Social media opens opportunities to connect and build relationships with other resellers. It's not about becoming the next big YouTuber. Social media connections and relationships open doors to opportunities to meet and network with other resellers who are more experienced. It allows you to access a vast wealth of knowledge being held within the reselling community.

Social media gets you access to knowledge and people which is why it’s so valuable.

My Takeaway: Use social media to learn from and connect with other resellers.

I asked Segun,

What is a question you wish someone would ask you about reselling?

“I wish people would ask me how to start reselling.” 

Segun believes people just starting in reselling should sell things lying around their houses. Start by selling electronics on eBay, learn how to get free shipping materials, and learn about shipping. These are the first things a new reseller should do to get started.

It's also important to let people know you’re a reseller. Some folks will just give you stuff they have lying around to sell. Most importantly, be patient and keep listing items to sell.
